STM unveils TUNGA-X cost-effective interceptor drone at SAHA 2026

Ticking multiple topical interest boxes – a counter-UAS solution, a cost-effective interceptor drone and an extremely mobile solution – STM unveiled the TUNGA-X at SAHA 2026 in Istanbul this week.

Specifically designed to offer an effective counter to the rising threat of low-cost, high impact drones in asymmetric warfare, TUNGA-X leverages STM’s considerable recent experience in autonomous systems to provide a cost-effective response to one of the most significant threats on the modern battlefield. “Reaching high speeds of approximately 300 km/h, operating in conjunction with radar and neutralising targets [in] mid-air, this interceptor drone system provides users with both technological and cost-effective advantages against asymmetric threats,” commented STM General Manager Özgür Güleryüz.

TUNGA-X features a multi-rotor architecture, allowing for vertical take-off from confined spaces or mobile platforms. An image processing-based autonomous target tracking system, coupled to radar detection of potential targets at ranges to 10km, enables the interceptor to deploy rapidly to anticipated approach corridor, verify the target by day or night and engage, using a proximity-fused 750g warhead to neutralize the adversary platform in mid-air.

Featuring a 15min endurance, GNSS or optical guidance systems, an attack speed of up to 300km/h and a range of up to 25km, TUNGA-X has a mission cancel function and a modular architecture that allows for simple integration to a wide range of potential launch platforms. The challenge for STM will be to convince potential customers that it can produce at scale and in short timeframes. Given the company’s recent history and string of successes, that should not prove to be a problem. The TUNGA-X joins a growing raft of drone interceptors that have emerged over the last 24 months or so, overcoming the ‘bullet hitting a bullet’ conundrum that challenged the uncrewed air defence business for the last two decades. The secret for volume proliferation of the TUNGA-X will lie in meeting customer expectations as to what “cost-effetive” really means.
