HENSOLDT has secured a contract to supply optronics spare parts for the Canadian Army’s fleet of Leopard 2 main battle tanks, the company announced on 19 May.
Valued at in excess of €10 million (C$16 million), the contract calls for the supply of spares for the Leopard 2’s optronic suite, including the PERI R17 A3 commander’s periscope, the ATTICA GL thermal imaging system, the SPECTUS driver’s sight system, the FERO Z 18 rifle scope and the EMES OPO rangefinder. The new contract perpetuates HENSOLDT’s support for LeoBen, the 22-nation international Leopard user group.
Expanding its service footprint in Canada, to include both ground-based and maritime systems, is also an important strategic move for the sensor house. “As part of our sustainment programme, HENSOLDT is working to improve system availability through accelerated maintenance. Our aim is to further reduce downtime and thus maintain operational readiness,” explained the company’s Head of Product Services Optronics. Marco Liebscher.
According to The Military Balance, Canada operates 20 Leopard 2A6M plus 20 upgraded 2A4M, with a further 34 2A4s held in the training role and a total of 52 Leopard 1C2 in storage.
HENSOLDT will be exhibiting at CANSEC in Ottawa next week, booth number 935.
