Finland strengthens counter UAS capabilities on land and sea

NewsRoboticsSecurity

The Finnish Border Guard, keen to strengthen border security, territorial integrity and critical infrastructure protection capabilities, has launched a project to develop and field counter-drone platforms suitable for ground- and sea-based applications.

Existing C-UAS technologies will be evaluated and integrated into patrol boats and ground vehicles for nationwide use. An essential aspect will be compatibility with existing frameworks already operated by various security authorities, with the objective being the creation of a cohesive surveillance network and a coordinated rapid response capability. The approach will therefore embrace static sensor installations, mobile C-UAS platforms and protected patrol units.

Procurement of prototype platforms has already begun, according to official sources, with evaluation and assessment to take place into 2028. Down-selection and decisions on definitive funding will be made after this assessment, according to knowledgeable observers.

A multinational Nordic consortium, led by the Guard, will handle production and delivery. Protected patrol vehicles will be built by Saab, based on the Sisu GTP 4×4 vehicle. The patrol boats will be manufactured by Marine Alutech, while Nokia Defense will provide intelligent network solutions. 61N Solutions will conduct the data integration with existing management systems – a not inconsiderable task in its own right.

The slightly extended assessment period means, effectively, that the production (and funding) issue will be an issue to be tackled by Finland’s next government, since parliamentary elections are due next year. The funding authorized and released to date is intended purely for integration development and prototype production. However, the Border Guard has already inked letters of intent with Saab and Nokia aimed at definitive supply contracts by the end of 2026, has already entered into a contract with Marine Alutech and has recently established a contract with 6iN Solutions.
