The Kaplan APC, manufactured in Türkiye by FNSS for Indonesia, where it is designated the Harimau, has passed pre-delivery acceptance tests, according to a manufacturer statement on 16 September. Additional testing will be conducted in Indonesia subsequent to shipping.
Following on from the collaborative development of the medium tank (known by the same names) between FNSS and PT Pindad, the Kaplan APC features advanced ballistic protection, including mine protection systems, and significant firepower, incorporating all the lessons learned during development of the medium tank. The vehicle is designed for a crew of three plus 10 dismounts and embodies an open architecture electronics architecture, facilitating simple integration of diverse mission-critical systems, including a battlefield management system and a 360° situational awareness system that provides day and night vision capability.
Optional systems for the vehicle include an active protection system, while automated fire suppression, air conditioning and CBRN protection are catered for by a sealed internal environment as standard. Capable of mounting both manned and unmanned turrets, the Kaplan APC can carry autocannon in 30 or 35mm calibres, a 120mm mortar or a range of ATGW. It is thus able to fulfil multiple battlefield and rear area roles. Furthermore, extensive use of common components will enhance interoperability: the vehicle also shares common subsystems with the Zaha armoured amphibious assault vehicle operated by the Turkish Naval Forces.
