DVD2026: Fering submits bid for LMV

One of the discussions dominating discussions at DVD next week will focus on the fascinating competition for the MoD’s Light Mobility Vehicle (LMV) programme. Alongside the ‘usual suspects’ at least one relative newbie – Fering Technologies – has already submitted a bid, according to a company announcement on 9 September.

Intended to replace the large and ageing fleet of Land Rover and Pinzgauer vehicles that have served the MoD for decades, LMV carries a potential price tag of around £2 billion. With defence industrial issues high on items of consideration – though perhaps not as high on the priority list as we might like – it is inevitable that issues of sovereignty, supply chain security, ‘green’ credentials and platform reliability will weigh heavily as selection criteria when the down-select process begins. Fering seems to have taken this very much to heart in crafting its bid, offering the government  “a British-made, modular wheeled utility platform to support force mobility and the electrification of the battlefield.”

One of the only British-designed and -engineered vehicles currently competing for LMV, the Fering Pioneer is designed around a modular architecture, featuring an ultra-lightweight carbon chassis that can be easily reconfigured to meet the nine vehicle variants required by the customer. For maximum versatility, the vehicle can be adapted in the field without specialist tools. Powered by a hybrid electric system, the vehicle offers a very creditable range of 7,010km and has the ability to deliver up to 60kWh of power for onboard electrical systems and/or deployable field equipment, enabling self-sufficient missions in areas where infrastructure and external logistics support is limited or non-existent. In EV-only mode, the vehicle can operate in complete silence for up to 80km.

Developed to handle extreme terrain, Pioneer features a 4-wheel internal independent air spring variable ride, with 18 bar active suspension, Central Tyre Inflation System, and on/offroad operating modes. Its innovative powertrain delivers 480 Nm of power to each axle. This delivers driving dynamics including a 60% gradient climb, 51° traverse angle and 0.75m step climb. It is fully submersible to IP67.

The vehicle is compatible with heavy duty ring mounts for M-2, MK-47, M-240 and Remote Weapon Stations. It is also smoke launcher compatible and can be operated remotely for autonomous operations in the field. With a curb weight of 1,750kg, gross vehicle weight rating of 3,500kg, maximum train weight of 7,000kg and maximum payload of 1,550kg, the vehicle is air transportable by CH-47, CH-53, C-130 aircraft and is also low velocity airlift deployable. “We have designed the Pioneer platform here in London and will build the vehicle in the UK under a manufacturing partnership for the UK MoD, so that we can deliver the best of British innovation and engineering to support British forces as they face the challenges FINAL of the coming decades,” stated the company’s Chief Commercial Officer, Gareth Reece. “Pioneer has the potential to revolutionise how light mobility vehicles are deployed in the field, offering ultra-long range, silent running, reduced thermal and acoustic signature, and the ability to generate and export significant power to electrical equipment once in theatre – it will allow teams to go further and do more than ever before […] A vehicle that can move quietly, sit quietly and power the equipment around it is an entirely different tactical proposition to a diesel utility truck. Pioneer is redefining expeditionary capability and offering the next generation of advanced operational independence for land forces.
