Rheinmetall and Espoo, Finland-based ICEYE have established a joint venture, designated Rheinmetall ICEYE Space Solutions GmbH, to be based in Neuss, Germany. Rheinmetall AG holds 60% of the joint venture shares, ICEYE the remaining 40%.
Operations will commence this year and the first satellite will be manufactured locally in 2026. The move, originally announced in May, comes at a time that the demand for space-based reconnaissance capabilities has seen a sharp increase, particularly in Europe, largely as a result of lessons being learned from the Russo-Ukrainian conflict. ICEYE’s specific expertise in synthetic aperture radar (SAR) enables the venture to directly address the requirement for high resolution images of areas of interest in all weathers and at any time of day.
