One thing the conflict in Ukraine has taught observers is the importance of logistics. The most exquisite capability fails to have an effect if it can not be brought quickly and efficiently to the point of need.
In this respect, Denmark continues to invest in effective logistics and the armed forces have now ordered, through Scania, an additional 15 Broshuis Heavy Equipment Trailers (HET), destined to transport the nation’s Leopard main battle tanks. To be delivered by year end, this will bring to 60 the total number of HETs in Danish service, greatly enhancing the strategic mobility of the Leopard 2A7 fleet, currently standing at 44.
Specifically designed for the transport of heavy military vehicles, including Leopards, the HET has a payload capacity of 85 tonnes, which can be increased to 90 tonnes when combined with a heavier tractor unit. This provides a high transport capacity, while maintaining a loading deck height of only 900 mm.
The trailer configuration is optimised for both on-road and off-road operations: the suspension system, with 600 mm travel and hydraulic compensation on both the gooseneck and axle assembly, ensures continuous wheel contact with the ground, even on gradients of up to 18%. Auxiliary steering and automatic wheel alignment further enhance the manoeuvrability of the vehicle combination during transport operations under a wide variety of conditions.
The contract is a collaborative undertaking between Broshuis, who will supply the HETs and Scania, who will supply the tractor units.
