The Taurus advanced tactical battle management system, developed by Asio Technologies and known in the Israeli Defence Force (IDF) as Noam, has undergone a significant upgrade and hundreds are about to be supplied to the IDF, according to a 23 October company release.
Aimed at the battalion-level intelligence officer, Taurus delivers critical intelligence information directly to the front-line operator, enabling local-level operational autonomy and providing advanced tools for terrain analysis, intelligence collection from remote sensors and the generation of targeting and combat plans under dynamic conditions. A key new capability has been the enabling of real-time creation of 3D photo-realistic terrain models, providing immediate visual understanding of the battlespace.
Taurus operates in conjunction with Orion, widely deployed within the IDF, where it is known as Olar. Developed by Asio, the Israeli MoD and several branches of the IDF, Orion enables advanced mission planning and supports a wide range of features such as 3D modeling and augmented reality. The system also includes the Lynx tactical augmentation binocular system, known to the IDF as Maayan. Orion offers real-time intelligence access across the entire force, from squad leaders to battalion commanders, while Taurus empowers the battalion intelligence officer.
“By delivering real-time, mission-critical data directly to front-line units – including 3D terrain modelling and other capabilities – we’re providing intelligence autonomy and ground dominance, contributing to safer and more effective mission completion,” explained ASIO’s CEO, Tomer Malchi.
“Orion provides advanced mapping tools directly to the soldier, while Taurus enables real-time mapping updates in response to the rapidly changing battlefield. The next step is to link Orion to the digital ground forces ecosystem, ensuring operational continuity through C4I systems. Another key integration is the Lynx system, which offers advanced situational awareness and rapid targeting capabilities,” added the Head of the MoD’s Directorate of Defence Research & Development R&D Division, BGEN Yehuda Elmakayes.
DA Comment
The integrated performance capabilities of Taurus and Orion appear to be a key discriminator in what the IDF suggests is its success in maintaining tactical superiority against ground forces in its recent and current conflicts. The capability to develop, disseminate and act on tactical intelligence derived from multiple sources at the speed of conflict is certainly a significant advantage.
