Despite multiple obstacles presenting themselves (and being hurdled) and the pace of events overwhelming meagre resources from time to time. Defence Alternatives celebrates its first birthday today – the 87th anniversary of Britain’s entry into what was to become World War Two.
Like Britain in the intervening period, we have learned a great deal from events, activities and comments since embarking on this exercise. Having survived a year, the time has come to start reacting to the lessons learned, subtly changing directions, ditching what we are not good at and focusing on the issues in which we think we excel.
No fanfare to trumpet a “re-launch,” no extravagant predictions of the effect changes might have – simply a workmanlike approach to providing a better service, promulgating the contents more widely and focusing on the core mission – to promote greater, more focused and better-informed thinking on all matters pertaining to defence and security.
The thinking that has gone into deciding on the changes (expect far more interviews and a much heavier focus on SMEs/PME/Mittleständer, for example) has been prompted by comments, discussions and suggestions from a wide circle of contributors – old friends and new – who have been constructive in their criticisms and generous with their suggestions. Thank you to all of you – hopefully, you will soon see tangible evidence that your investment of time and effort is not going unrewarded.
