Hensoldt’s non-rotating TRS-4D radar, installed on the frigate Baden-Württemberg, recently supported the live firing of the Diehl Defence IRIS-T SLM air defence missile, according to a 23 October company release. This was the first such firing aboard a German Navy frigate.
The naval variant of the radar stems from the same medium-range radar product family as th ground-based TRML-4D, which has been integrated with the IRIS-T SLM system for several years and is reportedly serving very effectively in the reconnaissance role in Ukraine. The family concept enables continuous product improvement and offers advantages in terms of spare parts supply and training.
“We can use software to expand the functionality of our products so that they can be used in different scenarios,” explained Markus Rothmaier, Head of Naval & Ground Radars. “With our capabilities in motion, we are predestined for maritime applications. Therefore, the use of the TRS-4D radar at sea in combination with the IRIS-T air defense system is another logical step on our path to equipping maritime units for today’s requirements.”

Several variants of the TRS-4D product family serve on a variety of German Navy vessels, including the F125 frigates and K130 corvettes. The company continues to drive further technological development to enhance performance, effectiveness and through-life cost efficiencies.
